The Fisher's Bride

*
The Fisher's Bride comes from the sea, but has also done her time on land. Her skull is affixed to a piece of earthy slate, backed by black, enameled wood. Upon a stone rests a single shell, a reminder of her past. Her face is framed in dried baby's breath from the artist's garden and her veil rests lightly on the top of her head, leaving her face bared towards an uncertain future, for she is bounded all around by the blue of the sea.

She measures 4" by 4" and includes the story, The Fisher's Bride on the back, which has been signed and dated by the artist.

Because of the three dimensional nature of the piece, only the flowers in the foreground scanned somewhat clearly. Here you can see how the lines of the skull are echoed by the tiny petals. The entire piece has been varnished to protect its more delicate elements.

The back has been titled, signed and dated by the artist and includes her story, The Fisher's Bride.

He pulled her up from the sea, bloody and gasping, yet when he saw the beauty of her scales he fell in love and let her go. It was too late, for she had also fallen into him. She sloughed her scales off from her body and kept them in a bag, crawled onto shore where she searched until she found the fisher's door. They fell in love again and married under one condition: he must never look into her bag. They were so happy for a time, but then fate tossed her back. He opened it to find her skin, golden, glistening, waiting for that moment when she would slide back in.
