Descent
There have been times when I've felt the mouth of the abyss gaping wide, opening in front of me. There have been times when I felt that I was about to embark upon that slow descent. None have written more lovingly about this journey than Catherynne M. Valente in her poem The Descent of Inanna, and this piece is dedicated to both the author and her poetry. A sprig of dying flowers and the bones of those who did not survive the journey lie before the mouth of the cave. Inside, snakeskin lines the walls and a fishhook dangles mercilessly from the spine of a vertebrae, as though waiting for someone to enter. These elements have been highly varnished and affixed to rose-stained wood. Descent measures 7.25" by 7.25" and it has been signed and dated on the back by the artist. Private Collection.
