The Greening

This one is for Kij, who longs for the green.
Small vertebrae alight from the slate-limb of a tree. The petals of flowers plucked from the artist's garden adorn the stained wood and the husks of dead flowers creep up the side, reminding us that spring's bounty always fades in winter. The frame was cut by hand and any imperfections may be blamed on the artist, who uses fairly primitive materials in the construction of these panels.
Both the frame and back have been painted black and the entire piece has been highly varnished. The work measures 3.5" wide by 8" high.
The back has been titled, signed and dated by the artist and includes the vignette,
The Greening.
Birds alight from tree-tops in a rush of wings, the sound of water falling, buds waking, flowers blooming. The sweet scent of the meadow calls you in, the trees in all their splendor grow thickly in the wood. All this is your distraction, your obsession, or should be, for it can not last but a season and then the cold winter will still the sap, and the petals will have fallen under snow. The green, it sings and calls for you to enter like any siren song and once within it enters you, so that upon your leaving, you've never left at all.
