Hourglass
The vast, dark night has wrappedher silken arms around you;
in solitude have you slept,
dreaming secret fears and pleasures.
She knows them all.
Now the moon is paling;
the rose of dawn creeps into
the soft landscape of night.
Darkness gives way to light.
The day appraoches,
bright and golden as a spring meadow.
Out of the realm of dreams you stumble
to greet the new sun.
What awaits
beyond your personal gates?
What tears of sorrow and joy
will soon carve trails into your face?
The night was long;
the day is longer still.
The sun will cross the sky
of your slight existence,
and someday set
upon the rim of the world.
How will you fill the hours?
