more about Papaveria

Papaveria Press represents a network of visionary artists talented across several media and sharing a common perspective. It has been called a radical press; authors and artists are encouraged to assist in cover design and they retain all rights to their work. The Press asks for nothing more than the privilege of publishing their work within a work of art—the book itself. This may be a departure from the norm, but I prefer to think of it as radical in the botanical sense of the word: arising from the root or its crown. The root of Papaveria is buried deeply within a dream—the Press flowered from there. The dream was of a collaborative experiment between myself and several carefully selected artists/authors whose work exemplifies and enhances the overall mission of the Press—to publish works with a distinctly mythic flavor.

The process of binding a book is also a collaborative project—between paper and board, thread and needle, hand and eye. All of the books are bound entirely by hand, using only the most primitive tools. The finest archival materials are used in their construction and every step in the binding process is performed as an act of love. I am a self-taught bookbinder—I read as many texts about the art and form of binding as I can get my eyes on and I make mock books constantly in the quest to perfect what I already know and to experiment with what I don't.

The union of content and form reveals the book as art—collaborative art resulting from the combination of disparate but harmonious elements to form a cohesive whole, sprung from the seed of dreams to manifest there in your hand.
