Searching for Osiris

*
When I saw this strange little breastbone on the sand, I was immediately reminded of the crown upon Osiris' head. I thought it appropriate that a portion of this god would appear in the shape of a bone, and I couldn't help but wonder how Isis must have felt as she traveled the earth looking for all of her lover's scattered parts.

The bone bark of Osiris floats on slate as murky as the Nile itself. Behind this scene a sliver of papyrus has been affixed. All of the elements are adhered onto wood painted a rich gold. The piece measures 3.5 inches wide by 5 inches high.

The back has been titled, signed and dated by the artist and includes the vignette, Searching for Osiris.

Through many passages I traveled, in dark places and on the edge of time I walked until my feet bled on the bones of those who passed before me. You were hidden well, each of your precious parts secreted in the bowels of the world. I re-membered you; I laid each vein in place and sewed back up your skin. I breathed life into your lifeless form like any mother and placed your crown upon your head like any queen. And yet, through all of this I lost myself, left myself where you had been and when your eyes opened, the thing you saw was not the woman you had left behind. And you, now king again—now you have no time to search for me.
