What She Sees

*
Inspired by a well known zen koan, What She Sees does not seek to answer the questions of reality, but only to present the idea that reality could lie on either side of dreams or, as in this case, on either side of the looking glass.

Her bones have been placed in front of a mirror; if you look closely enough, you'll see yourself in its reflection. She's mounted on red brick and bordered by an antique-white painted frame. The frame, as usual, has been cut by hand by the artist. The piece measures 7.25 by 7.25 inches.

The piece includes the story, What She Sees on the back, which has been signed and dated by the artist.

Wide-awake she dreams. She pulls the covers back, stretches her wings. She looks into the glass; she does not recognize the pale lines of her form. In dreams she is awake, looking out from behind her reflection as her own eyes peer back in. She is not certain of on which side of the mirror she is standing, or on which side of her dreams she truly wakes. She sees a feather where fingers should be and fingers where there are feathers. She flies when she could be walking and walks when she could fly. What shape is hers? Which of these skins is real? It must be all the same, she thinks and looks again. Her hooded face stares back, daring her to choose.
